Our rate is $180 a square metre to supply and lay, which covers the base, the mortar bed, the pavers and the finish as one number. What moves the final figure is the material you pick, whether old paving has to come up first, how much cutting the shape needs, and whether a barrow can reach the area.

On anything that has to stay flat, we think so. Wet laying costs more on the day because it's slower and uses more material under the surface. What you get is paving that behaves as one piece, so when the ground moves the whole surface lifts slightly together instead of one paver stepping against the next.

Paving inside your own boundary, a backyard, a pool surround or an alfresco, normally needs nothing. Anything on the verge or a new crossover to the road does, and the rules differ by council. A heritage or character overlay can also have a say on materials visible from the street. We'll flag it if we see it, and checking with your council is the owner's call.

It depends on where you are, because the ground changes across the metro. On coastal sand and near salt air, porcelain and dense natural stone hold up best. Inland on clay, what's under the paving matters more than the paver itself, which is why we spend the time on the base and the falls.

Autumn and spring are the easiest. Mortar sets fast in the middle of a Perth summer, so summer work starts early and stops when the heat arrives. Winter is fine between fronts, though a wet week can hold a job up because a saturated base can't be compacted properly. If your paving has already moved, none of that is a reason to wait.

We'll come back with a price the same or next day once we have a photo and a rough size. From there, a straightforward surround or alfresco is usually two to four days on site, a driveway three to five, and a lift and relay adds a day for taking the old surface away. Give wet laid paving a few days before heavy traffic goes over it.
