Paving Scarborough

Scarborough has the tightest blocks in the northern corridor, so paving here starts with getting material to the back. The suburb has been rebuilding itself for a decade, and a lot of the work is a new surface around a new home on a block with no room to spare.

  • Material through the house on boards
  • Narrow surrounds are almost all cut work
  • Beds laid and closed the same day

Wet laid, on a full bed

Every paver goes down on a full bed of wet mortar across its whole underside, over a base compacted to carry what will sit on it. No voids under the middle, nothing to rock, nothing for water to get into and sit in.

It is slower than screeding sand and laying onto it, and it costs more on the day. It is also the only version of this that is still flat in ten years, which is why it is the only version we do.

Every paver, every job, on a full bed of mortar.

Tight blocks, blowing sand

Northern corridor

Deep coastal sand, and a lot of ground that was filled and levelled before the house went on it.

Scarborough is deep coastal sand and wind. Between the two, any surface left unpaved fills with drift, and any base left open overnight is a different shape in the morning.

The rebuild wave is what shapes the work. Old cottages have come down and three storey homes have gone up, and the paving is usually a narrow strip between a new wall and a boundary fence.

Narrow is what makes it difficult. On a surround a metre wide every paver is a cut paver, and the setout has to be worked from the finished edge back, not from the wall forwards, or the last row lands as a sliver.

Three things that change a job in Scarborough

  • 01

    Access through the house

On a lot of these blocks there is no side access at all. Material goes through the house on boards or over the fence, and the quote reflects the real method rather than an imaginary one.

  • 02

    Every paver is a cut

Narrow surrounds are almost entirely cut work. It is slower, the setout matters more, and a job priced as if it were an open courtyard will be a bad job.

  • 03

    Wind and drift

Beds get laid and closed the same day where we can. An open mortar bed collecting blown sand for a night is not a bed you want a paver going onto.
