Wet laid, on a full bed
Every paver goes down on a full bed of wet mortar across its whole underside, over a base compacted to carry what will sit on it. No voids under the middle, nothing to rock, nothing for water to get into and sit in.
It is slower than screeding sand and laying onto it, and it costs more on the day. It is also the only version of this that is still flat in ten years, which is why it is the only version we do.

Clay that moves every season
South and south east
More clay through the profile, which holds water instead of shedding it, so falls decide everything.
Canning Vale carries clay through the profile, and clay is reactive. It takes on water and swells through winter, then dries out and shrinks through summer.
That is a seasonal movement under everything on the block, and dry laid paving has no way to resist it. Individual pavers sitting on sand simply follow the ground, so the surface goes hollow in one place and proud in another and the joints open up.
Wet laying will not stop the clay moving, and anybody who tells you otherwise is guessing. What it does is bond the whole surface into one slab over a compacted base, so a small movement underneath shifts the whole area slightly rather than tilting one paver against its neighbour.

Clay will not soak water away, so it has to be shed. A surface with no proper fall on clay ground is a surface that stays wet, and wet clay moves the most.

Most of Canning Vale is nineties and two thousands estate housing with a normal side gate, so material generally gets to the back without a long barrow run.
