Paving Nedlands

Nedlands gardens are old, and their roots are the reason most paving here eventually moves. It is an established riverside suburb of large blocks and very mature trees, and that is the job rather than a complication in it.

  • Roots exposed and assessed before any bed
  • Large blocks, so a truck gets down the side
  • Built to shed water near the foreshore

Wet laid, on a full bed

Every paver goes down on a full bed of wet mortar across its whole underside, over a base compacted to carry what will sit on it. No voids under the middle, nothing to rock, nothing for water to get into and sit in.

It is slower than screeding sand and laying onto it, and it costs more on the day. It is also the only version of this that is still flat in ten years, which is why it is the only version we do.

Every paver, every job, on a full bed of mortar.

The roots win, every time

Central suburbs

Limestone closer to the surface, older housing stock, mature trees and access measured in centimetres.

The ground itself is sand with limestone below, and near the river the water table is closer than people expect. Neither is the reason paving fails here.

Trees are. A jacaranda or a fig that has been in a Nedlands garden for fifty years has a root plate wider than its canopy, and the moisture under an old paved area draws roots straight to it.

Once a root is under paving it lifts it, and no amount of relaying the surface fixes that. The root gets dealt with at base stage or the same lump comes back, which is why so many of these yards are on their second or third surface.

Three things that change a job in Nedlands

  • 01

    Root work is the job

On a Nedlands relay, exposing and assessing roots is the part that decides whether the new surface lasts. It happens before a bed goes down, not after a lump appears.

  • 02

    Large blocks, real access

Most blocks here take a truck down the side, which is a genuine saving compared with the tight suburbs either side of it.

  • 03

    Water table near the river

Close to the foreshore the ground can be wet at base depth. Where it is, the base is built for a surface that sheds water rather than one that expects the ground to take it.

The suburb tells us the ground and the likely access. The photo tells us the job. Together they are usually enough to talk about a real number rather than a range.
