Two Rocks sits at the far northern end of our paving run, on some of the newest ground we work. Blocks up here were cut into the limestone ridge and backfilled to level, which means the depth of made ground can change from one corner of a yard to the other.

Wet laid, on a full bed
Every paver goes down on a full bed of wet mortar across its whole underside, over a base compacted to carry what will sit on it. No voids under the middle, nothing to rock, nothing for water to get into and sit in.
It is slower than screeding sand and laying onto it, and it costs more on the day. It is also the only version of this that is still flat in ten years, which is why it is the only version we do.

Fill, at no two depths
Northern corridor
Deep coastal sand, and a lot of ground that was filled and levelled before the house went on it.
Two Rocks estates were built by cutting into a limestone ridge and backfilling the low side with sand to get a level pad. The house sits on an engineered footing that goes through all of it. The backyard does not.
That is the whole problem in a sentence. A pool surround can start over solid ground at the house and finish over two metres of fill at the back fence, and dry laid paving on that will tell you about it within a few summers by dropping along one edge.
So the base gets checked across the whole area rather than at one spot, and where the fill is deep it gets compacted properly before anything goes over it. The mortar bed then locks the paving into one piece, so a small movement underneath does not become a lip you catch your foot on.

New estate, open block
Most jobs up here still have side access, because fences, reticulation and landscaping have not all gone in yet. Paving before the rest of the yard is the cheapest it will ever be.

The travel is real
Two Rocks is an hour from the middle of the run on a good day. It does not change the rate, but it does mean we quote a full day on site rather than a half day.

Wind off the water
Sand blows across an unpaved block constantly up here. It gets swept off the bed before laying, because grit under a paver is a void waiting to happen.
