What we lay
Pool surrounds and coping are most of what we do. The same method goes under driveways, alfresco areas and paving we're relaying after it's sunk or spread.
Pool paving and pool surrounds
A pool surround is wet for most of summer, sits on sand, and gets walked on barefoot, so it has to be laid properly. We bed every paver into wet mortar over a compacted base, so the whole paver is supported and nothing drops when the ground settles.

Pool coping and capping
Coping is the edge you sit on and the first thing you see, so we take our time with it. On a curved pool we cut each piece to follow the curve, so the joints stay even the whole way round.

- Cut piece by piece to follow the curve
- Overhang set so water drips clear of the pool shell
- Bedded and grouted to take the weight of someone sitting on the edge
Alfresco and outdoor living
Paving that runs level from inside the house out through the door, so the alfresco feels like part of the room.
Relaying sunken or spread paving
We lift paving that's sunk, rocked or spread, fix the base, and relay it on a wet bed. It's about half of what we do.
Why we lay wet
There are two ways to lay paving. Dry lay sits the pavers on a bed of sand. Wet lay beds each paver into mortar over a compacted base and grouts the joints solid.
Around a Perth pool, on sand, in a climate that swings from soaking to bone dry, wet lay is the one that lasts, so it's the only way we do it.

Pool pavers we lay in Perth
Five materials, all laid the same way. Which one suits your pool depends on how much sun it gets, how it feels underfoot, whether the pool is salt or chlorine, and what the house is already made of.
The classic pool stone, and the one most Perth pools end up with. It stays cooler underfoot than darker stone and grips well when wet.
Available tumbled for a softer, rustic edge, or honed and filled for a flatter, more modern finish.
Precise, hard-wearing and almost non-absorbent, so it keeps a tight joint and shrugs off salt, sunscreen and stains.
It suits large formats and modern homes, and it rewards careful laying.
Irregular stone pieces cut and fitted on site, so no two jobs look the same. It's the most labour-intensive paving we lay and the most satisfying when it's done well.
Getting the joint widths and stone selection right is where the skill is.
Natural stone
Granite, bluestone and limestone, each with a different look and a different feel in the sun. Limestone is soft-toned and suits Perth homes.
Bluestone is dark and dramatic but gets hot in summer, so we'll tell you where it works and where it won't.
Indian sandstone
A textured surface with real grip when wet, in warm tones that suit older Perth homes and red brick.
Comfortable underfoot and a good middle ground on cost.

How we lay a pool surround

Compacted base, checked for fall
We build and compact the base first and make sure water will drain away from the pool before a single paver goes down.

Full wet mortar bed
Each paver is bedded into wet mortar across its whole underside, so there's nothing to rock and nowhere for water to sit.
- 03
Cut to the curve
Coping is cut to follow the shape of the pool, piece by piece, so the joints stay even.
- 04
Grouted and finished
Joints are filled solid so sand can't wash out and the surface stays one piece.
