Learn moreEvery paver goes down on a full bed of wet mortar across its whole underside, over a base compacted to carry what will sit on it. No voids under the middle, nothing to rock, nothing for water to get into and sit in.
It is slower than screeding sand and laying onto it, and it costs more on the day. It is also the only version of this that is still flat in ten years, which is why it is the only version we do.

More clay through the profile, which holds water instead of shedding it, so falls decide everything.
Baldivis grew fast, and it grew on ground that was cut, filled and levelled to make estates. Under the fill there is clay, and clay is reactive.
Filled ground that was never properly consolidated settles on its own. Reactive clay underneath it swells and shrinks with the seasons. Between them there is more movement in a Baldivis backyard than in almost anywhere else on this list.
On top of that sits paving that came with the house as part of a build package, laid on sand to a price. It is not a criticism of anyone in particular, it is just what a builder's allowance buys, and it is why so much of it is being lifted at ten years old.

Before anything is laid, the base gets checked across the area rather than at one point. Fill depth on these blocks is rarely the same twice.

Clay under fill will not soak. Falls and a real destination for the water are set at base stage, not corrected afterwards.
